Mat Kendrick Column: West Brom stars must show commitment

“We looked at how their teams set up, their results, whether their style of play was conducive to the players we’ve got and the way our supporters expect us to play. Once we knew Tony Mowbray was going we were well ahead of the game.

‘‘We had a list that we had been tracking for many months and Roberto was among those names.”

So, although hell hath no fury like a football manager scorned, Di Matteo can’t complain too much because, apparently, he was pursued in the same way last season with the Baggies match-making in the midst of their love affair with their ex.

Well, at least Albion can’t be accused of going behind the chain smoking Chelsea old boy’s back.

Just like marriage, a significant proportion of coach/club liaisons are destined to end in heartbreak and separation before too long.

But, in the just same way as holy matrimony, it does seem defeatist entering into a relationship expecting it to fail and, even if those fears are rational, surely it’s better to keep them to yourself rather than risk upsetting your other half.

“Yes, darling, I do love you, but I’ve got to think about myself and look out for my next fling just in case I dump you or you dump me first.”

Despite their roving eye, Albion can’t quite be accused of being bigamist Baggies or two-timing Throstles, but a show of commitment to their current coach wouldn’t go amiss.
