PAUL Ince today apologised to the fans for Wolves' mediocre season - but vowed the team would pull out all the stops to finish on a high.
Another inspirational campaign from Ince, belying his 37 years, has not been matched by that of the team, leaving Wolves heading into tomorrow's clash with Rotherham with nothing but pride to play for over the last three games of the season.
And the skipper, whose return to the starting lineup after injury has coincided with Wolves' 15-game unbeaten league run, insists three more decent results would set things up nicely for next season.
"Despite everything that happened at the start of the season we can't use that as an excuse," said Ince.
"Even with players leaving and injuries, we knew there was still enough quality in the side to make the top six of the Championship if not the top two or three. The fact we haven't done that means we have underachieved and I would describe the season as a case of what might have been.
"With the players and quality we have got, it's a big disappointment that there are three games to go and nothing to play for.
"Personally I'm very pleased with the way I've performed this year, particularly after coming back from injury, but it's not about me, it's about the punters who come and support us.
"They've had a hard and frustrating season and I can only apologise on our behalf."
Ince is hoping tomorrow's clash with the Millers can be a game to boost those supporters' spirits.
"It is imperative we try and finish by keeping this unbeaten run going," he added.
"Rotherham is going to be difficult - they are already down so will be very relaxed - and it's not going to be one of those games with five, six or seven goals."
Unlike the guessing games of previous years Ince has already indicated he is ready for one more year, and continues to hope that will be with Wolves.
"I'm probably like the gaffer at the moment in terms of waiting till the season is more or less at an end before deciding what to do," he said.
"But I've really enjoyed the last three years here, they've gone so quickly, and I want to strive to help the club towards the big time whether as player, or in the future coach or manager.
"I'm really excited that if things are done and sorted out I'll be playing again next season.
"Here the fans know what I'm all about and there's no reason for me to leave Wolverhampton unless they tell me I've got to go."
