Saddlers snap up Weston

WALSALL were today set to complete the signing of defender Rhys Weston on a one-year-deal.

The 26-year-old former Arsenal trainee agreed terms after impressing on trial at the Banks's Stadium.

A right-back for most of his career so far, Weston will fill a vacancy in that position created by the summer departure of three players - Chris Westwood, Craig Pead and Mark Wright - who played right-back at various times last season. Weston ended last term at Port Vale and his move to the Saddlers adds further to a colourful CV.

The Surrey-born player was on Arsenal's books as a youngster and has also spent a spell in Norwegian football as well as with Cardiff City.

Weston's talent is evident from his seven senior caps for Wales. He will be looking to get his career back on track at Bescot and, with arguably his best years in front of him, possibly earn a long-term contract there and add to his international experience.

Meanwhile, the Saddlers were today settling in at Lilleshall for a training camp.

Manager Richard Money has decided to base his squad there for a week - thereby following his winning formula from last year.

The week at Lilleshall will culminate with the Saddlers' first senior pre-season friendly, at Worcester City on Saturday. A Walsall second string play at Boldmere tomorrow.
