Weston wants Walsall to send message to rivals

WALSALL defender Rhys Weston believes a positive result against Southend could send out a message that the resurgent Saddlers mean League One business.

The recent revival has seen Walsall move from the foot of the table to within three points of the play-offs and just five off the top, a sign of how quickly fortunes can change in such an evenly matched division.

And Weston, part of a Walsall defence which will have to deal with goal-laden former Wolves striker Leon Clarke, believes things will get even better if they can edge out Southend tomorrow afternoon.

"There's never really a bad time to play one of the top teams," he said. "If you're in a bad run maybe it gives you a kick-start to your season while obviously we're in good form and full of confidence.

"I think if we apply ourselves properly and build on the foundations of the work we have done over the last couple of weeks the result will take care of itself.

"It's the old cliché that winning breeds confidence, which is so very true. A few weeks ago we were a shadow of the team we are now, and all that stems from winning games.

"If you can then go out and beat one of the big teams that are there or thereabouts all of a sudden you start to think you can be up there as well."
