Rene keeps his hand in at Saddlers

WALSALL goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin is far from out of sight, out of mind despite being on loan at Hednesford.

Because as a result of the Pitmen's part-time status, 20-year-old Gilmartin is still training at the Banks's Stadium on several occasions each week.

And that has also given him the chance to catch up with recently-appointed coach Jimmy Mullen, whom Gilmartin had already worked with at Hednesford before the 54-year-old joined the Saddlers.

"Jimmy's a great man," said Gilmartin. "He's really enthusiastic about his football and is a great person to have around. He is an excellent coach and is proving to be a great addition to our coaching staff. And you can already see how well Richard (Money) and Jimmy are working together.

"Jimmy has been working with the first-team and the younger lads and that can only benefit us all.

"It's great for me personally too because Jimmy knew what I was about before he arrived thanks to our time together at Hednesford."

Despite a 2-0 FA Cup qualifying defeat to Rushall last weekend, Gilmartin is enjoying life at KeysParkand has already chalked up 17 appearances this season.

"Like I've said before, I'm just enjoying playing first-team football."
