Jimmy Mullen: Walsall did not deserve to lose against Aston Villa
WALSALL manager Jimmy Mullen admitted his side were far from the finished article after their excellent showing against Villa.
Despite losing 3-2, Mullen was more than happy with what he saw.
But he revealed he expected to make two or three new signings within the next few days and confessed there would be casualties from the squad that faced Villa.
He said: “I have other people in mind who we’re talking to at the moment. There will be two or three signings to add to this lot but there will be one or two we’ll be moving on.
“I was delighted with the performance and felt disappointed for the lads because they didn’t deserve to lose. It was only our third game and after playing against the likes of Hednesford Town and Worcester City, this was big jump and I knew it was going to be a major, test.
“I know it wasn’t the strongest Villa team but when I saw the side, it was strong enough for me.
“But results don’t mean anything at the moment. The most important thing is we’re prepared for August 9 when we play Yeovil.’’
Mullen used the game to give a run-out to Canadian Keegan Ayre, who is an Under-21 international.
“He might even be a full international, I’m not quite sure,’’ said the manager.
‘‘He’s been playing for Hibernian, but a contact of mine in Scotland spotted him and recommended Keegan to me.”
