Central defence role was fine for Rhys Weston

WALSALL hero Rhys Weston revealed he was no stranger to playing in central defence.

The former Cardiff City full-back was one of five changes to Walsall’s line-up at Bristol Rovers as manager Jimmy Mullen brought him in for his first game of the season.

Weston then found himself switched to the heart of Walsall’s defence within 10 minutes following an injury to Anthony Gerrard.

But he was unfazed by the unscheduled alteration and went on to produce a man-of-the-match performance - much to the surprise of many of Walsall’s travelling supporters. Weston said: “When I went to Cardiff City, I found myself playing at right-back.

“But I’d played in central defence before and I still haven’t given up hope of playing in central defence in the future.

“I didn’t even know if I’d start the game until 1pm and I found myself tiring towards the end.

“I’ve played two full reserve team games but nothing prepares you for first-team football. As a makeshift back four, I thought we coped pretty well. It was just a case of digging in and getting through.

“Losing Anthony Gerrard was a blow but we produced a real team effort. The midfield did a fantastic job getting back to support us as we knew Bristol Rovers were always going to have a push.

“I thought we were really good value and this win should instill confidence.”
