Mullen's delight over duo

DELIGHTED Walsall manager Jimmy Mullen praised the performance of strikers Jabo Ibehre and Michael Ricketts following their win over Carlisle.

The pair were a constant threat throughout and even drew admiration from Carlisle boss John Ward.

Mullen said: “They will be an awful threat to the opposition in League One – no matter who they are.

“That’s why I pick them and that’s why I coach them in the manner I want them to play.

“What we have to be mindful of is that the rest of the team have to be up there in support quickly.

“If they are causing problems up front, we’ve got to have people in support and beyond, ready to pick up the pieces that they create.

“At the moment I can’t ask any more of the players.

“But we’re in September, still in the beginnings of the season, so we’re not getting carried away.’’

Mullen had no doubts that Walsall’s continual pressure would eventually pay dividends against Carlisle.

He added: “For 10 minutes, I honestly thought a goal had to come.

“We were bombarding their goal with crosses and pressure to the point where something had to give.

“My only concern was if we left the back door open at the other end, they could have snatched something.’’
