Walsall sign Josh O'Keefe to bolster midfield

NEW Walsall signing Josh O’Keefe believes his move presents the perfect opportunity to make a name for himself.
The 20-year-old central midfielder had grown frustrated by his lack of opportunities at Blackburn Rovers, where he had been since he was 12 years old.
He had been looking for a fresh start after Rovers boss Sam Allardyce told him in January it would be best if he moved on.
He spent a week training with Walsall in February and even though he also had a spell on trial with Derby County, he knew a move to the Saddlers would present him with a great opportunity.
“I was trying to get away from Blackburn and I really enjoyed my week here,” said O’Keefe.
“I went on to Derby but this was always an option. I enjoyed it here and I wanted to come back.
“The manager (Chris Hutchings) had been to see me in the reserves and it is always good to feel wanted. It is a confidence boost.
“The lads were good and there was a great spirit. I had kept track of what they were doing last season and knowing the lads here makes it easier.
“Sam Allardyce told me that it would be better for me to move and get some games.
‘‘If I have to step down a level to get games then that is what I have to do.
‘‘I want to play at a highest level I can and if that means taking a step backwards to move forwards then that is what I have to do.
“I just need some games now to get some more experience.
“Now the manager has told me to show what I can do, and that is what I intend to do.”
Hutchings said: “Josh is a player that we have been monitoring for some time.
“He is a young lad who wants to push on and test his ability at the next level.
“This is a chance for him to develop and go on to bigger and better things on the first-team stage.
“He is a box-to-box type player who is capable of scoring goals from midfield and is an exciting addition to the squad.”
