Hutchings hails the significance of back-to-back wins for Walsall

CHRIS Hutchings has hailed the significance of putting back-to-back league wins together after his team finally managed it for the first time this season.

A 2-0 triumph home success over Stockport County last Saturday, on the back of the 3-2 win at Wycombe, meant that, in two games, the Saddlers garnered a six-point haul which in leaner times can take a more or month to scrape together.

The burst lifted Hutchings’ side into the top ten of League One and sent them into action against Brentford at Griffin Park today sitting just four points adrift of Huddersfield Twon in the fourth play-offs spot.

And the manager believes his team, heavily restructured during last summer, is starting to gel and grow in confidence.

“I have always said it is vital to put back-to-back wins together,” the manager said.

“We have done that now and we fancy our chances of having a good season – but so do teams around us. You need that little bit of luck too and we need some consistency because that is what will take us into the top six.

“We are in the top half and we want to stay there and be in the play-off places. We are striving to do that.

“Those back to back wins were a long time coming. It is a mental thing in any sport, if you win games it breeds confidence and you try things you wouldn’t try when not so confident,” he said.

“You need a little bit of the rub of the green as well and hopefully we can keep building from here.”
