Chris Hutchings' half time 'harsh words' have an impact as Walsall secure draw at Brentford

CHRIS Hutchings admitted some “harsh words” were handed out at half-time after Walsall again took far too long to get going in their draw at Brentford.

The Saddlers have lost just one of the last six games despite putting in mediocre first-half displays in several matches.

Again on Saturday, Hutchings was required to let rip at the break when his team was fortunate not to trail by more than 1-0. And again his forceful advice galvanised his players as they responded to equalise through Steve Jones and force enough chances to win the game.

“We had a few harsh words at half-time and sorted a few things out,” Hutchings said. “We have no divine right to go out there and play well.

“We have to work hard at it. We were slow out of the blocks and they caused us problems.

“They had the better of the first half but in the second we did a lot better. We scored the goal, had a couple of other good opportunities and, if our final ball had been a little bit better, could have won the game.

“Credit to the lads for coming back from a goal behind away from home. That’s four games unbeaten now so we are on a nice little run.”

Hutchings reckons Jones’ excellent form will benefit the whole Saddlers front line.

“Steve is on a good run at the moment and long may that continue,” the manager said. “He is elusive and can go out of the game for periods, as he did in the first half, but in the second half we got him on the ball and he gave them problems.

“He is fully fit and enjoying his football and when that’s the case you try things and they come off.

“He is the man in form and if people are marking him then Troy Deeney, Darren Byfield or Sam Parkin might get left alone.”
