FOOTBALL managers are reluctant to set points totals that will keep their team safe from relegation.
Well at least that’s what they tell us.
But Walsall boss Dean Smith is different and has stuck his neck on the line, albeit in humorous fashion.
The likeable manager reckons maximum points will guarantee survival for the Saddlers so who can argue with that?
“I have set a points total yes,” he said.
“We’ve got seven games left which means that 21 points are up for grabs.
“We’re on 40 now, so 61 will keep us safe.”
Joking aside, I think Walsall need 50 points if they are to stay up, although three wins might just be enough.
With three home games on the bounce following on from today’s trip to Plymouth, the Saddlers have a real chance to pull off one of the greatest escapes ever.
It’s an incredible turnaround for a side who looked doomed and all but relegated just a few months ago.
At the start of the year they were slumped at the foot of the table and there looked to be no way back. Fans had given up hope and some even refused to attend while the previous regime were in charge.
But Smith has instantly won the fans over with a string of positive results and decent signings.
He was also brave to give up his job for life as head of youth to take a gamble in the world of management and he’s not bad with the media either.
Lively, good banter, passionate about his job, and serious when he needs to be – Smith is so far succeeding in his new role.
