FA Cup: Walsall FC still have a battle to make third round of FA Cup

WALSALL still have plenty between them and a bumper FA Cup payday after they learned they will be at home to Millwall in the third round if they beat Dagenham & Redbridge in a replay at The Banks’s Stadium a week tomorrow.

After scrapping out a 1-1 draw at Dagenham, the Saddlers found their luck out. If they see off the Daggers they will face Millwall, hardly a cash-spinning attraction, in the third round for the third time in seven years.

They must beat the Championship side to stand a chance of landing a fourth-round plum though it’s by no means certain they will get past Dagenham, judging by the joyless slugout in east London on Saturday.

It was only fair both teams went into the third-round hat as neither deserved to go through at the first attempt.

Dagenham were there for the taking but Walsall handed them the initiative by staying in neutral throughout the first half. As soon as the Saddlers improved slightly after the break, the home side faded.

Eleven minutes from time a great cross from Mat Sadler was headed home by substitute Claude Gnapka. That should have been that but five minutes later Lee Beevers allowed Jon Nurse to turn away from him and lash a 25-yarder into the net.

DAGENHAM (4-4-2): Shea; Rose, Spillane, Doe, Ilesanmi; Scannell (Tomlin 81), Ogogo, Gain, Nurse; Scott, Woodall (Walsh 85). Subs: Hogan, McCrory, Etito, Maker, Bingham, Walsh.

WALSALL (4-4-2): Walker 6; Beevers 6, Lancashire 5, Smith 6, HSADLER 7; Halliday 5 (Gnapka 60 6), Taundry 5, Chambers 6, Nicholls 6; Macken 6 (Jarvis 85), Grigg 5 (Paterson 68 6). Subs: Grof, Butler, Peterlin.

Referee: D Deadman (Cambridgeshire)
