Bury 0 West Brom 2: Chris Lepkowski's big match verdict

AND so Albion eased through into the next round of the Carling Cup - but this more of a 'getting to know you exercise' for Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo.

The Baggies won 2-0 thanks to first-half goals from Graham Dorrans and an own-goal from Michael Jones.

Di Matteo learnt, for instance, that young Dorrans possesses a decent shot, as seen by his fifth minute goal.

But he will also be aware that the midfielder gives so much else to his engine room when played centrally, as he did for long periods yesterday.

Physicality, a desire to battle and no end of energy. His batteries run on long-life, where others start to wilt.

Don't be fooled by the League Two opposition - Dorrans can only prosper this season because he is, not only naturally gifted, but has the attitude to develop.

Around him were other opportunists trying to make an impression.

Craig Beattie faded a little during the second half but before the break he showed so much ability and determination to impress. He took on defenders, stood up to the physical challenges and, with a little more luck, would have scored himself.

It was his cross which led to the unfortunate Jones carving the ball into his own net after 25 minutes.

Filipe Teixeira was charismatic and skillful early on too, helping to play a part in Dorrans' opener. Teixeira always looks for something different on the field.
