Wolves 3, West Brom 1: Chris Lepkowski's verdict - and what it means for transfer activity this summer

ROY Hodgson will today attend a board meeting to discuss Albion’s summer recruitment strategy.

It might be a longer meeting than he’d hoped for.

While Albion deserve all the plaudits they have received for their excellent form since Hodgson’s arrival, their first-half performance at Wolves suggested they needed a slap around the face – if only to wake them up.

The Baggies boss took exception to a question about whether his side were suffering from a lethargy associated with clubs who have secured survival – but it was hard to argue against the compelling evidence played out at Molineux.

From the tenth minute until around the 50th, Albion did everything they assured us they wouldn’t do.

They coasted, freewheeled and appeared unable to cope with the intensity shown by Wolves.

It was too easy. The home side dictated the tempo and Albion were unable to tune into that level.

Injuries and a suspension to Paul Scharner give some credibility to the notion that Albion were, as the club’s official website put it, ‘depleted’. That wasn’t strictly the case.

Graham Dorrans, while influential, has been out for some time. Chris Brunt, Steven Reid and Scharner were notable absentees. Four players should not make or break a team’s progress.

What it did perhaps tell us is that, if you scratch beneath the surface, Albion are in need of some post-season surgery.

When Hodgson sits down with Jeremy Peace and Dan Ashworth today, he will be acutely aware that reinforcements in key areas are vital.

The starting XI, as we’d imagine it, is strong. There are further players who can do a job adequately.

But, equally, too many players left question marks against their names with a poor display at Molineux when presented with a chance to impress the manager.

We knew this when Robbie Di Matteo was manager, we know it now Hodgson is in charge.
