West Bromwich Albion make bid for Madjid Boughera

Madjid Bougherra

ALBION have made a move for Charlton's £2million-rated defender Madjid Bougherra.

Tony Mowbray wants the giant Algerian stopper to form one half of a new-look central defensive partnership with Bolton's Abdoulaye Meite.

The Albion boss has admired Bougherra for some time and looked into signing him around the time the player moved to Charlton, in January 2007.

But Albion still have some work to do as the 25-year-old is currently being pursued by Real Betis.

The Spanish club have been in talks with Charlton for some weeks but have yet to reach an agreement.

Charlton are entering the final year of their parachute payments and are looking to raise fresh funds. Addicks boss Alan Pardew has already indicated that he expects the 6ft 3ins man to move on.

He said: "Real Betis have been in the frame for a long while with Madjid.

"They still are and Madjid will probably be sold.

"I expect to lose him, not because I want to, but because I have to."

Charlton will seek in the region of £2million for the 22-cap French-born Algerian international.

The player started his career with French side FC Gueugnon before spells at Crewe and Sheffield Wednesday.

It was at Hillsborough where he caught the eye, being linked with moves to Reading and Everton.

He eventually moved to the Valley for £2.5million, in January last year, and has made 34 appearances since, scoring twice.

Meanwhile, Albion aim to made progress with Bolton over Meite.

Mowbray was somewhat annoyed that Bolton recently revealed Albion's interest but I understand the Baggies remain in the hunt.

They are in the process of making an offer for the 28-year-old.

Meite has no future at the Reebok after falling out with Bolton boss Gary Megson.
