Korea Olympic snub for Do-Heon Kim suits West Bromwich Albion just fine

Do-Heon Kim

DO-Heon Kim’s absence from the Olympics will be Korea’s loss, but Albion’s gain.

That is the verdict of Albion No.2 Mark Venus, who praised the midfielder following his excellent display in last night’s friendly at Northampton.

Kim scored Albion’s only goal at Sixfields but was also the best player, by some distance.

The playmaker was hoping to travel to Bejing for the Olympics but was not chosen.

Venus believes that is good news for Albion, especially as the Baggies are already having to make do without Dutch under-21 international Gianni Zuiverloon.

“We’ve already lost one player to the Olympics and if we’re being selfish then we are glad Kim’s staying here,” said Tony Mowbray’s right-hand man.

“We would have understood if that wasn’t the case but it’s good for us that he’s staying here, can train with us, show the manager his talent and get ready for the Premier League.

“It’s been better for Kim to stay here.”

Venus believes Kim is making good progress and should be competing for a place in Mowbray’s first-team line-up once the new season starts.

“Kim played well last night,” added Venus.

“You can see the quality he’s got on the ball and he’s still adapting to the pace of English football but it’s about the team getting used to him and him getting used to the team.

“Once that happens and he gels he will be a good player and addition to this football club. When he came here we knew he had talent.

“It’s not easy for these kind of players to adapt to English football but he has a great attitude, he competes, he does everything right so we are pleased he’s getting up to speed and is working hard in pre-season.

“I think the Premier League will suit him more than the Championship because the game is more spread out and more technical.

“If he keeps playing as well as he did then he will give the manager a nice problem.”
