ALBION were today closing in on Charlton defender Madjid Bougherra.
The Baggies have had a bid in excess of £2million accepted by the Addicks and the Algerian was today due to travel up to the Black Country for talks.
If all goes to plan he may also undergo a medical with a view to completing his transfer before Saturday’s game at Swansea, although Real Betis remain in the hunt for his signature.
The Baggies are also expected to firm up an offer for Bolton defender Abdoulaye Meite.
Early reports state they have agreed a fee of around £2million for the centre-half, although I understand those claims are a little premature.
Even so there is a definite intention on Albion’s part to get both players in as soon as possible.
The only stumbling block over Meite will be whether Hull City match Albion’s offer, which would effectively leave it up to whichever club offers the more attractive personal terms.
Tony Mowbray is running out of friendlies ahead of next month’s curtain-raiser against Arsenal.
I understand the Baggies boss may field a slightly weaker team in Friday night’s game at Hereford, with more senior players expected to play at Swansea on Saturday.
Albion will have just two friendlies after that, with Tuesday’s trip to Walsall followed by a home friendly against Real Mallorca.
Mowbray is still keen to sign an all-rounder for his midfield along with two new strikers.
Luke Moore, Ishmael Miller and Roman Bednar are considered as Albion’s first-choice forwards but none of the trio have shone during pre-season, with only Miller finding the net so far.
