Chris Brunt backs West Bromwich Albion to defy the critics
CHRIS Brunt is hoping West Bromwich Albion will continue to make fools of their critics.
The Baggies scored three times against West Ham to record their first victory of the season.
Brunt, who scored the winner seven minutes from time, admitted he had felt stung by criticism from some TV pundits.
Match of the Day’s Mark Lawrenson recently mocked Albion for lacking fire power, while Tony Mowbray’s men were described as a ‘poor, poor team’ on Sky Sports last week.
Brunt admitted the critics’ words were being used as inspiration.
“When you have one up front it’s vital you score goals from midfield and we did that,” he said.
“In the games against Everton and Bolton we proved we can get players going forward from midfield so I don’t think those pundits are right in what they’re saying - but then everyone is entitled to their opinion.
“As long as we keep listening to what the gaffer is saying then we have a good chance to do well.”
Brunt admitted the first win was vital, not least as some of his team-mates did not even know his full name before Saturday’s game.
“I knew their names but they didn’t really know who I was and the same for some of the other boys,” he added. “Big Jon (Olsson) came in and did very well.
“He looks a tidy footballer and some of his passes actually started off moves for us, including the third goal, so he looks a big asset.
“We have probably played better in the previous two league games and we gave away two sloppy goals - again something we’ll have to work on - but fortunately for us we got the first three points and let’s hope we can kick on next week.’’
