Tony Mowbray: Roman Bednar was desperate to impress
ROMAN Bednar was desperate to prove himself in the Premier League, according to manager Tony Mowbray.
The striker scored his second goal of the campaign - both spot-kicks - to help the Baggies to their first win of the season.
Bednar replaced Ishmael Miller, who failed to recover from a leg injury - which Albion were keen to keep close to their chest in the run-up to Saturday’s game.
“Ishmael didn’t train fully last week,” said Mowbray. “He took a knock on the outside of his shin/knee at Bolton and he had bone bruising.
“It was a decision as to whether we gave him an injection or left him out. I had a good chat with him on Saturday morning. But I think Roman Bednar has been bursting out of his shirt to play.
“He’s let me know his feelings once or twice and told me how hungry he is to play.
“The opportunity was there to give Ishmael a rest and let his leg settle down, and give Roman the chance to show he is worthy of a starting place.”
Mowbray hopes Saturday’s win will silence Albion’s critics, some of whom claimed they would struggle to score goals at this level.
“I’m pleased with the team that they scored some goals,” added Mowbray. “Every week I have to listen to experts telling us we’re going to struggle to score.
“I had no fears we could score goals and we might have been sitting here having scored more.
“We do have the players who can score goals and get in the areas to score goals.
“I’m just pleased some of our chances went in today.”
