West Brom boss will have to sell to buy

Albion boss Tony Mowbray will have to generate his own transfer money by selling fringe players during the January window, chairman Jeremy Peace has stated.

Peace said that the club would be looking chiefly in the loan market to bolster Mowbray’s squad as they battle to avoid an instant return to the Championship, and revealed that a major deal for a Baggies player fell through at the end of the last window which would have financed another acquisition.

However, Peace rejected any suggestion that Albion had not made sufficient investment in Mowbray’s squad since they secured promotion and claimed Albion were in the top half of the Premier League in terms of money spent on players.

“I have said year after year that what we try to do here is equip ourselves for the full season in the summer,” Peace said.

“We have always said January is just for ‘topping up’ because of injuries – like Ishmael Miller – or for players who might be nearing suspension.
