Keeper Dean Kiely is crucial to West Brom says boss Tony Mowbray

the Championship and he has shown at Championship level he is more than capable of playing in a successful side.

“All players have got to weigh things up. Do they enjoy coming into work every day and what are their longer-term goals?

“If Dean was all about appearances then he would have made the decision not to sign a new deal, I’m pretty sure.”

Mowbray admits Kiely is still a good alternative to Carson, who has occupied the first-team spot since signing from Liverpool last summer.

“Throughout his entire career Dean has generally played first-team football regularly and it’s great credit to him that he’s been as supportive as he has,” added Mowbray

“I just feel that if Scot wasn’t going to play, whether through injuries, or suspension or lack of form, it was important to have a safe, experienced pair of hands, who knows what the Premier League is all about, behind Scot.

“We’ve got a very talented young goalkeeper playing at Shrewsbury at the moment in Luke Daniels.

“And, hopefully, when the time is right that will mean we’ll have brought one of our own through.

“I see that sometime in the future and, at this moment, it was important to keep the experience of Dean Kiely around the building.”
