West Brom can claw back to safety says Chris Brunt
West Bromwich Albion’s precarious position has gone from bad to worse in the space of a week but midfielder Chris Brunt said the squad still believe they can claw their way to safety.
Defeats to Everton and Arsenal have been compounded by victories for their relegation rivals. Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers have picked up morale-boosting wins, while Stoke City have claimed four points from their last two games and even Hull City have ended their miserable run with a last-ditch winner at Fulham on Wednesday night.
As a result, Albion are now six points from safety with just ten games remaining and while the task before looks daunting, Brunt believes it is not impossible, although he warned they must cut out the sloppy defensive errors if they are to stand a chance.
“You always have to believe,” said Brunt.
“We have shown this season we are as good as a lot of the teams in the Premier League, but a lack of concentration and not putting our head on the ball at set-pieces is costing us.
“We have to stick together as a group of lads and be more aggressive as a team. It’s well documented that we’re not the most aggressive of sides.
“It’s all well and good working on it in training and everybody knowing what to do before the game, but if we don’t put our head on the ball when it comes into the box teams are going to punish us and we have seen that in the last couple of games. We can’t keep doing it because the games are running out.
“As the gaffer keeps saying, we’ve still got a few home games that we need to pick up points in. Arsenal was possibly a chance because they haven’t been going well but that one is gone now. I know it gets harder as each game slips away but you have to look at it like that.
“It’s over now and we have to look at the next game and at trying to win points at West Ham United.
