Shelton Martis intent on making an impression at West Brom

“The club have an option on me so I’m not thinking about moving or staying.”

Martis also revealed how close he was to leaving The Hawthorns before his return to the first team.

He had offers to rejoin Doncaster on loan, where he spent several weeks earlier this season, with a further bid coming in from Charlton before that.

But injuries to Abdoulaye Meite and Leon Barnett pushed him back into Tony Mowbray’s first-team plans.

‘‘When Abou and Leon got injured on the Thursday in my mind I was thinking ‘oh no, not this again’ because I’ve wanted to go on loan before and then something has happened and the manager hasn’t been able to let me go.

“But in my mind it never occurred to me to go to him and say I wanted to go because I’m not that type of player.

“Maybe just before I played at West Ham I had a moment, like every player has, where I thought ‘I don’t know if it’s going to work here before I don’t think I’ll play again this season’.

“Yet suddenly the chance came and I have done okay but I still have a long road to go.”
