West Brom boss promises team will be a real force in the Championship
"We carry no debt and we don’t need to sell any players so if we keep people like Greening, Koren, Morrison, Fortune and Olsson, who competed well against a strong Portsmouth team, I believe we will be strong in the Championship."
Mowbray accepts responsibility for Albion's demise this term, but he accepts that while the club's financial structure did not help their cause this season, at least it will not mean the fire-sale of players.
"I think we got the balance wrong in the squad but I knew that at the time," he added.
"It’s very difficult to take a Championship team and turn it into a Premier League team playing the way we play.
"We are where we are, we’ve got the amount of money we’ve got and we’re a football club that carries no debt whatsoever.
"As a coach I want the best players on the pitch, of course, but I’m just in charge of coaching and managing the players.
"It’s not up to me to put the club in jeopardy long-term because they’ve got supporters who care passionately about their team.
"There has to be a balance between making sure Albion have got a team on the pitch and keeping the club on a level.
"The disappointment is that if we drop out of this league we are going to lose a little bit of the progress we’ve made.
"Whereas I feel if we could stay in this league it would be so much better next year because we would be able to add one or two quality players and go to places like Portsmouth and let them know they’re in a real match."
