Roman Bednar drugs claim: Police probe West Brom striker allegations

POLICE were today investigating after West Bromwich Albion striker Roman Bednar was allegedly caught on camera buying cocaine.

The future of the 26-year-old Czech international was hanging in the balance today after he was suspended by the club before they were relegated in yesterday’s 2-0 defeat by Liverpool.

The move came after Bednar was pictured in the national press allegedly paying a drug dealer parked outside his luxury Sutton Coldfield home £400 for cocaine and £20 for cannabis.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said today: “We are aware of the content and allegations contained within the newspaper article and are looking into the claims made.”

The incident allegedly happened just hours after Bednar played in the Baggies’ win against Wigan earlier this month.

Albion manager Tony Mowbray said: “Until we can get to the bottom of it Roman will be suspended – I think that’s all we should say for the moment.”

He added: “I condemn drugs, end of story, but I don’t want to get drawn on it, really. I don’t think it’s pertinent that I discuss and get into it today. I don’t know what a drug is - I haven’t got a clue.”

Later Bednar apologised for bringing “negative publicity” to the club.
