West Bromwich Albion to swoop for Glasgow Rangers star Barry Ferguson

Inevitably, there may be interest from other clubs, with his wages also posing a potential problem.

Ferguson reportedly takes home in the region of £30,000-a-week, way in excess of Albion's current top earner, so he would be required to take a pay cut, not least as the Baggies' players will be flexing down on their own salaries following relegation.

Albion may be able to get around that to some degree by coming to an agreement with Rangers, possibly by getting him for a cut-price fee which would give them more leverage in terms of wages.

Newcastle and St Petersburg were linked with a £3million move in January but Rangers may now be prepared to accept a fee of around #1million.

It would also be a significant statement on the club's part for next season, underlining Tony Mowbray's shift towards bringing in more experience, with a view to eventually bringing more flexibility to the club's current wage structure.

Mowbray has admitted that a lack of know-how had proven costly during Albion's failed Premier League campaign.

Ferguson has made 319 appearances for Rangers over two periods, scoring 60 goals. He also spent 16 months at Blackburn, moving to Ewood Park in August 2003.
