"There are different types of play in the Premier League and the Championship.
"In the Premier League there is a slower build-up and then in the last third it is more sharp and less touches.
"In the Championship it is more end to end and I think being able to play both styles should definitely help me out.
"I’ve played in the Championship and I know what to expect this season.
"I have to work hard at weaknesses and try and learn from what I did. It was a big jump from one division to another.
"With hindsight, at the time I was probably more suited to the Championship."
Barnett was notably singled out after one poor performance against Villa by previous boss Tony Mowbray.
And one of Roberto Di Matteo’s first tasks will be to sort out what was the worst Premier League defence last season.
But Barnett feels the onus is on individuals to improve, although he has already seen a marked difference between the two managers in how they approach their work.
"I basically don’t blame the manager for that - it’s down to the defenders as individuals and a unit," he continued.
"They are different managers with their own ways.
"Tony Mowbray was a bit laid back on matchdays. We haven’t see know is like but I’m sure he’ll be good.
"I think the playing style is similar and so is their ability to bring their thoughts onto the pitch."
