Leon Barnett says Youssouf Mulumbu's permanent move to West Bromwich Albion was crucial

“I think we do need somebody like Youssouf to protect the back four but it’s not down to me who is in the team or what positions they play. I’m sure he will help us.

“It’s down to the manager and he has those decisions to make.”

Simon Cox, Albion’s other summer signing, failed to shake off a minor injury before Saturday’s friendly against Varteks.

The striker scored 32 goals in all competitions last season and was top scorer in League One.

Barnett is looking forward to seeing his new team-mate unleashed on the Championship.

“I didn’t really see him play last year but I saw one of his goals on the volley,” he added.

“He has done well to get himself a move here and in training he looks very sharp but I still think there is more to see.

“He is young and he still seems hungry and is always positive in training so I’m looking forward to seeing him this season.

“He has settled in quickly with the lads as well which is a good thing.”
