"We hope to give a better assessment about half way during the season or even towards the end."
Plymouth come to the Hawthorns with manager Paul Sturrock coming under growing pressure from his own fans.
Di Matteo accepts that the nature of football means that all managers are rarely given much grace these days.
He expects Argyle to make life difficult for his side this Saturday.
"I think clubs will try and stop us," he added.
"That will be the agenda for many clubs.
"What we need to do is face that and realise that, in the Championship, West Bromwich is one of the bigger clubs and most clubs will be thinking that and playing defensively.
"Defensively they are very good.
"They are solid, try to close the spaces down and will do what most teams try to do at the Hawthorns.
"They have some dangerous players too so we will have to play well."
Speaking about Sturrock, Di Matteo added: "It's a delicate issue. Some managers have gone after two games so it's a tricky one.
"These days clubs aren't prepared to give managers time. It's a results driven industry so I can only concern myself with this job."
