West Brom defender won't come up short

Gonzalo Jara

GONZALO Jara has been backed to overcome his height disadvantage after making a 'fantastic' impression since his move to Albion.

The 24-year-old, who arrived from Colo Colo at the end of August, has made a promising start to his Baggies career.

Jara, considered a utility man, has most recently starred in the heart of defence alongside Jonas Olsson.

And his lack of height - he's about 5ft 10ins tall - will not cause too many problems, according to Albion assistant boss Eddie Newton.

"It's not a problem," laughed Newton, who has assumed managerial duties in the absense of flu-ridden Roberto Di Matteo.

"I grew up and played with Frank Sinclair.

"He was about 5ft 9ins, played centre-back, full back and could out-jump people who were 6ft 1ins plus. Paul Parker was the same.

"If you know how to time the jump then you will be able to deal with it, as he does.

"Gonzalo is very clever with what he does.
