Mat Kendrick Column: West Brom stars must show commitment

NO sooner has suave Italian stallion Roberto Di Matteo rolled over a couple of times and relaxed with a few cigarettes than Albion are already eyeing up their next conquest.

Dan Ashworth’s comments last week that the Baggies were now courting Di Matteo’s successor struck me as a little disrespectful.

What Di Matteo needs right now in his first sticky patch as Albion manager is the support of his sporting director, not conjecture about his eventual replacement.

Our Albion expert Chris Lepkowski commented yesterday that “something, somewhere, isn’t quite right at the moment” about Di Matteo’s promotion chasers.

And being publicly informed that the club has started the search for their next boss less than four months after he took the job undermines the former MK Dons chief. “It’s a process that we monitor constantly, because you’d be daft not to,” said Ashworth.

“The average lifespan of a manager or head coach is 13 months, which is frightening, so if you’re not prepared for the possibility of change you’re not really taking your responsibility seriously.

“So all through last season I identified and tracked some potential candidates and did reports on them, similar to the way we do player reports.
