Tom Ross Column: Liverpool penalty against Birmingham City was a disgrace!

However, since the first ever game football has been about scoring at one end and keeping it out of the other, so what the hell is he on about?

It was the same when Villa won their earlier this season, post match he was banging on about possession and chances.

Rafa! What ever happened to integrity, fair play, and honesty?

I wonder what he, N’Gog, Gerrard and co would have said had the penalty been at the other end with Liverpool winning 2-1?

I await with interest to see what the powers that be do to the French striker.

Whatever they do will not change the result but in my opinion the FA should retrospectively charge him with bringing the game into disrepute.

His union leader Gordon Taylor of the PFA should also come out and publicly condemn him and his unacceptable behaviour.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for either to happen.

By the way, had we had assistant referees behind the goal as they do in the Europa League, or TV evidence for the referee, then that penalty would not have been given?

The result of that would have seen N’Gog sent off for diving while Blues would be two points better off.

n Aston Villa winger Ashley Young has been given a World Cup lifeline by Fabio Capello.

Picking him for the friendly against Brazil gives him an opportunity to stake a claim for a seat on the plane to South Africa in the summer.

Ashley is one of the most infuriating players around. Sublimely talented and an exceptional athlete, he should be terrorising defences week in and week out.

Sadly this season he is not the player he was and the Villa fans are right to be asking the question as to why not.

He has everything to be a top player and last season looked to be on his way with some memorable performances including his dramatic and sensational game-winning goal at Everton.

He can deliver a free-kick or corner with Beckhamesque deadly quality. This should see him get more assists than anyone else at Villa Park.

However, it appears this season that he is constantly looking for the tackle and spends a lot of his time in conversation with the referee. Hopefully this call-up by Fabio will give him the boost he needs to get back to his best.

That will surely be great news for Villa and England.
