“I can only play 11 and a midfield four or five.
“We just had too many and I had to make decisions.
“I made the decision he could go on loan because he wasn’t playing week in, week out.
“He wanted to go out and I thought why not because La Liga is a good league.”
One player who has not enjoyed the greatest of loan spells is Joss Labadie.
The Baggies midfielder scored five goals in 14 games for Shrewsbury but was singled out as a scape goat by Town boss Paul Simpson following their FA Cup defeat to Staines.
Di Matteo has no qualms about welcoming the 19-year-old back into his fold.
“I don’t know all the facts so I can’t comment just yet but’s it’s not a problem from my point of view,” he added.
“He’s back with us. No problem.”
