Chris Brunt says Baggies can hit a ton this season

Chris Brunt

CHRIS Brunt believes Albion are capable of scoring more than 100 goals this season.

The Baggies have netted 45 goals so far in all competitions, 39 in the League and six in the Carling Cup.

They took their tally to 15 from the last four games with their 4-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, with 25 League games still to come.

And Brunt, who scored Albion’s fourth goal, sees no reason why Roberto Di Matteo’s men cannot match the achievements of Tony Mowbray’s side two years ago.

The Baggies scored 109 goals during their title-winning campaign, which included 15 FA Cup goals in the club’s march towards the semi-finals.

“I think anything’s possible with this squad of players,” said Brunt, who is Albion’s top scorer with six.

“We can score from everywhere. Simon Cox got two which is good, Jerome Thomas as well.

“Luke Moore put a great shift in too and things don’t seem to be falling for him but if he keeps getting chances then he’ll start putting them away.

“Credit to him, he’s working his socks off, pulling people away to allow me and Jerome to get forward.

“There’s no competition between us as such.

“We don’t care who scores as long as we get promoted.

“If Jerome gets 20 and I get only ten then I don’t mind as long as we go up.

“I got ten in my last season at Sheffield Wednesday so it would be nice to hit double figures and having six now I’m happy with that.

“But we create enough chances for maybe six or seven players to get into double figures so we will see what happens.”

Brunt insists the main aim remains finishing in the top two. There are six points between second-placed Albion and Leicester in third, although that is effectively a three-game swing given the Baggies’ excellent goal difference.

The Northern Ireland international believes that maintaining a gap will ensure Albion remain in a strong position even if they slip up at any point.

“Creating that gap between second and third is the main thing,” he added.

“First or second is the main thing. If we can keep increasing that gap then we can afford a couple of bad performances. We need to keep doing that.”
