West Brom want to sign Preston North End star

West Brom have identified Preston keeper Andy Lonergan as potential back-up to current No. 1 Scott Carson.

West Brom have drawn up a list of several candidates to provide depth in the position and perhaps even a challenge to the former England international.

And the highly rated 26-year-old is one of those players Roberto Di Matteo is considering making a move for although with three years left on his contract Lonergan would command a significant fee.

The North End stopper has been a virtual ever present in his home town club and has missed just four games in the last three seasons.

Indeed he has played 198 times for the Deepdale outfit and produced displays good enough to attract the attention of Premier League neighbours Blackburn Rovers last summer.

But in October he signed a new deal which runs until 2013 thereby ending speculation also linking him with several other Championship clubs.

However with Carson seemingly ensconced between the sticks Di Matteo appears to be looking for someone to rival veteran Dean Kiely.
