West Bromwich Albion: Roberto Di Matteo puts trust in Carson

TO SAY it wasn’t the best weekend for Premier League goalkeepers last week would be something of an understatement.

There was Chris Kirkland allowing a cross to squirm inside his near post.

Then there was Pepe Reina clutching at air after being caught out by the sun not long after Manuel Almunia had allowed a shot to fly past him.

And, of course, there was Scott Carson.

The Albion goalkeeper was to blame for Chelsea’s first and, according to some pundits, was also partially accountable for their second.

But Roberto Di Matteo is in no rush to punish his captain.

As far as the Italian is concerned, he fully expects Carson to respond to his errors – starting with today’s game against Sunderland.

He believes Carson is mentally tough enough to bounce back.

“He knows he made a mistake and he is disappointed about it,” said Di Matteo.

“But I have confidence in him and I would like to show him on Saturday that he can win us some points.
