Scharner: I had other options, but chose West Brom

“And what we must not ignore is that, despite the global crisis, my financial situation has further improved.”

Scharner claims that Roberto Di Matteo has already hinted he will play more of a role in midfield than in defence, although he can fill both roles.

Whether he does or not remains to be seen but Scharner was pleased to meet his new team-mates yesterday.

“Especially important to me was that I would play more games in midfield for my new club and coach Roberto Di Matteo has assured me that he plans to play me in that position,” he continued.

“I now have a chance to prove myself and I’ll be glad to meet everyone.”

Meanwhile, Rochdale boss Keith Hill believes Albion, in signing Craig Dawson, have picked up a player who will prove a ‘major asset’ for them in the Premier League.

Dawson signed a permanent deal with Albion on Monday but was loaned back to Rochdale for the remainder of the campaign.

Hill said: “We are really pleased for Craig as he has achieved what he wants and West Brom have secured the most talented young defender in the country.

“West Brom will realise that he will be one major asset in the Premier League.

“I wish people would start believing me when I tell them how good he is.

“I consider him to be at least capable of playing in the Premier League.

“I know I don’t have a lot of experience dealing with Premier League players or dealing on that perspective but football is football and I know a footballer when I saw one.

“His future is bright, there’s no question about it.”
