West Brom: Chris Lepkowski reviews the summer signings at the Albion
Sep 4 2010 by Christopher Lepkowski, Birmingham Mail
STEVEN REID: Signed on a free transfer, the experienced Reid offers Albion great versatility. He can play right-back and central midfield but has been under-used so far this season, mainly due to the form of Youssouf Mulumbu in the defensive midfield role, and Gonzalo Jara at full-back. The former Republic of Ireland man called time on his international career to devote his full efforts to club matters. Albion can only benefit.
GABRIEL TAMAS: Has been an ever-present in the Albion side since he originally signed on loan last January. Completed a permanent £800,000 move to the Hawthorns from Auxerre during the summer. A solid, no-nonsense stopper who isn’t afraid to play the ball out of danger areas with composure. His personality would suggest that he could be captain material should Scott Carson or Jonas Olsson ever find themselves out of the side.
PABLO IBANEZ: The Spaniard was a surprise addition to Albion’s squad following his release by Atletico Madrid, where his stock understandably fell following his public gesture that he wished to join bitter rivals Real. Pablo has been capped more than 20 times by the national side and, while he certianly has the pedigree, he may need some time to get to grips with the demands and physicality of the English Premier League.
BOAZ MYHILL: Has been admired by Albion’s scouting network for some time. The former Villa youth player was close to joining the Baggies several years ago but finally moved from relegated Hull City this summer to offer competition to first choice goalkeeper Scott Carson. Myhill has so far only found himself involved in one Carling Cup game but his reputation is based around his agility and shot-stopping abilities. May need to be partient if he wants to get past Carson in the pecking order.
