Clemence: Why West Brom's Carson is still part of England plans

Scott Carson

ENGLAND goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence has assured Albion captain Scott Carson he is still very much a part of Fabio Capello’s plans.

Carson revealed in yesterday’s exclusive Birmingham Mail interview his anguish at being left out of Tuesday’s game against Montenegro despite a good run of recent form.

But Clemence, a winner of 61 caps, insists Carson is still part of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign and the 62-year-old praised him for the way he had bounced back to form following his mistake against Croatia three years ago.

“When you make a mistake, you are going to get a lot more criticism than anyone else gets,” said Clemence.

“You have to be very strong-willed to get over that – it is in the job description of being a goalkeeper.

“In Scott’s case, I watched him for a number of games after Croatia and on every away game the fans absolutely slaughtered him.

“At that time I think he was 22 and you could see in his body language it was destroying him confidence-wise.

“When you are young and get that amount of criticism, and you are still trying to prove yourself, then it is difficult.

“I can relate back to Pat Jennings at Tottenham.
