West Brom: Forget league positions, survival still only target

Scott Carson

SCOTT Carson has played down Albion’s lofty league position by insisting: “Survival is our only target.”

The Baggies travel to Manchester United on Saturday hoping to preserve a five-game unbeaten run, which stretches back to August.

Roberto Di Matteo’s men are in sixth spot following their unbeaten run during September, which included wins over Arsenal and Blues, along with draws against Spurs and Bolton.

But Carson feels that becoming an established top-flight club is Albion’s only priority.

He claims nobody at The Hawthorns will be getting carried away with Albion’s good start.

“We haven’t readjusted our ambitions,” said the skipper. “Our target is 40 points – nothing less. Any more will be a massive bonus.

“We won’t get carried away. People are talking about top six but here they’re not.

“We just want to make sure we build as a club. We’ve had a good run and we know that a bad patch can happen and dampen our confidence.

“We have to be realistic about our ambitions. The main thing is to still be in this division next year.

“If we can do that then only then will we think about moving on to the next target.”

Carson feels Albion can head to Manchester confident of getting a positive result.

Albion have not won at United since their famous 5-3 victory in 1978 – which, coincidentally, was their next away game following a victory at Arsenal.
