JOHN Carew would be a major coup for West Brom, according to ex-Baggies marksman Jason Roberts.

The Blackburn Rovers striker is due to face his former club in Sunday’s televised clash at Ewood Park.

Roberts, who scored 24 times in 89 League outings for Albion over a three-year period in the early 2000s, has watched his old club’s progress with interest.

Albion have been pursuing Carew since the start of the window and, following Darren Bent’s arrival at Villa, hope to resurrect a loan deal which was close to completion before Emily Heskey’s suspension.

The biggest hurdle from Albion’s point of view is the prospect of other clubs entering the race, not least those who might wish to sign him permanently.

Roberts has been intrigued with Albion’s pursuit of Villa striker Carew, who he feels would be an ideal fit for Roberto Di Matteo’s men.

“John Carew would be a fantastic signing for most Premier League clubs,” said the Grenada international, who celebrates his 33rd birthday next week.

“I know things maybe haven’t gone to plan at Villa but when he’s on form he is simply unplayable.

“He would be a massive asset to any club with aspirations of doing well in the Premier League.

“He’s a good build, he’s got presence and is difficult to handle when he gets going.
