Chelsea v West Brom: Opposition scouting report

IT’S frightening to think that the last time Albion collected any points from Stamford Bridge was in 1988 – or, to put it another way, when Andre Villas-Boas was still at school.

The 33-year-old Chelsea boss takes charge of his first game at Stamford Bridge this weekend following their 0-0 at Stoke last weekend.

Villas-Boas’ record at Porto was excellent. He became the youngest manager to win a European trophy, also claiming the Primeira Liga and Portuguese Cup during his time at the Estádio do Dragão.

His assistant will need few introductions. Roberto Di Matteo managed Albion to promotion in his first year in charge.

And while the Italian found himself leaving the Hawthorns back in February, most Albion fans will have fond memories of his time at the club, not least the victories at Arsenal and Blues.

His appointment as Chelsea No.2 was a little surprising but his status as a cult hero remains following his exploits as a player during the late 1990s.

Chelsea retain a similar shape to the one which served Carlo Ancelotti so well – well enough for them to finish second, but not well enough to keep him in a job.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech was yesterday ruled out for three to four weeks after suffering a medial ligament injury in training,

Daniel Sturridge remains suspended, while 18-year-old Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, signed from Anderlecht, has trained with the team this week, despite as yet having no clearance to play.

David Luiz is a major doubt with a thigh injury.
