West Brom: Roy Hodgson tells Simon Cox to make the most of his big chance

Simon Cox

SIMON Cox has been urged by Roy Hodgson to grasp his Albion chance when it arises.

The striker is in line for a greater presence following the injury to Shane Long, which will keep him out for up to six weeks.

Cox has been named in every Albion squad so far this season but, so far, has come off the bench in only two Premier League games so far.

Although Somen Tchoyi and Peter Odemwingie are seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order, Hodgson wants the Republic of Ireland international to make the most of any opportunities he gets.

“This pushes Simon nearer,” said Hodgson.

“He’s been involved in every game so far but with him, Odemwingie, Long and Tchoyi we have four strikers competing for two places so he’s not had much of a look-in.

“But with Long out it brings him much closer and, furthermore, I must say his training has been very good.

“His desire and enthusiasm has also been there and when he gets his chance I’m sure he’ll be ready to take it.

“So it’s important for us he maintains his level because there is also the Irish game coming up and he looks like he will be the major influence, along with Jon Walters – certainly if Robbie Keane doesn’t recover.”

One player who has been improving for Albion is Tchoyi.

Consistency has always been the Cameroonian’s most siginificant failing and Hodgson is confident that will come.

“The more chances he gets and the more he feels he’s being supported and we’re backing him, the better he will be,” added the Albion boss.
