West Brom: Jonas Olsson hopes for a dream at Wembley

THE roles will be reversed if Jonas Olsson fulfils his dream of playing at Wembley and starts, as expected, for Sweden against England tonight.

In Albion colours the defensive rock is used to being the man everyone looks up to and listens to on the pitch but on international duty it is a different matter.

Olsson has been capped only four times by his country and for long periods watched on as other defenders got the nod alongside veteran centre-half Olof Mellberg.

But his ability to remain first choice under three different Albion managers, and play alongside almost a dozen centre-halves during his four seasons at The Hawthorns, seems to have finally been noticed by coach Erik Hamren as he prepares for a second successive start.

“For me it has always been a dream to play at Wembley,” said Olsson, who impressed on Friday despite Sweden losing 2-0 in Denmark.

“I know playing in the Premier League will boost my chances of playing for my country so my main aim is to do well here.

“But it’s always a proud moment for me when I represent my country.”

The role Olsson plays for Albion is similar to that of Mellberg’s for Sweden as they both perform well regardless of their defensive partners.

The 28-year-old has been as commanding as ever for Roy Hodgson’s side this season and has welcomed another two new arrivals, Gareth McAuley and Craig Dawson, into the first team.

“I always try to help the guy next to me and always try to do the best in the situation,” he said.

“I try to make him feel comfortable playing alongside me and I hope Daws felt that way against Swansea and that Gareth has in the games he’s played.

“I think it’s important when you have a centre-half partnership that you always back each other up, whether it’s in play or off the field.

“That’s what I aim to do and that’s the feeling I like.
