Wolves capture Southampton midfielder

WOLVES have continued their squad building ahead of the new season with the capture of Southampton midfielder Andrew Surman. The 22-year-old has left his boyhood club for a seven-figure fee, believed to be s1.2 million, to give the debt-ridden Saints a vital cash injection.

Surman, a former England Under-21 international, has signed a three-year deal at Molineux with the option of a further 12 months.

Meanwhile, Mick McCarthy insists he will be trying to recruit more players of Kevin Doyles ilk after expressing his satisfaction at the biggest transfer in Wolves history.

McCarthy says Wolves are working on bringing in similar quality to their record signing, even if those arrivals are not seen as being as ground-breaking as the Doyle deal.

Irrespective of whats been spent or what Kevins earning, if I was going to splash that sort of cash I was happy to spend it on him said McCarthy.

Its good to have the backing to be able to do it but, like me, the board see him as a good player.

Hopefully we can do similar. It might not be as ground-breaking but were looking for more quality players.

This is a coup, but well see how people feel about whoever else we sign.

The s6.5 million fee for the Republic of Ireland striker is a far cry from the cash McCarthy was given in the season his Sunderland team were relegated from the Premier League.

We certainly didnt do anything like this thats for sure, he added.

But since then they have and survived in there.

I think being in the Prem gives you a better chance of attracting players and Im delighted weve signed Doyle.
