Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 Preston North End 3: Report

whisker of a second goal for the visitors as his shot flew over Ikeme's crossbar.

With four minutes of the half remaining, Preston's Youl Mawene diverted the ball goalwards and Jon Parkin headed onto the crossbar. Wolves could not clear and St Ledger was the first to react, prodding the ball in from close range.

Parkin had the ball in the back of the net for Preston following a goalmouth scramble just minutes after the restart, but the referee's assistant ruled out the strike for offside as St Ledger lay on the ground after an aerial challenge on Ikeme.

Parkin should have added a third for the visitors in the 55th minute but wasted a great chance as the home defence took too long to clear.

But Elliott did extend Preston's lead just after the hour mark following further good work from the impressive Wallace down the flank.

The on-loan Sunderland winger got the better of Richard Stearman and Ikeme fumbled his cross straight to Chris Sedgwick, who saw his shot blocked and the ball fell to Elliott who made no mistake from 18 yards.

Chris Iwelumo cannoned a header against the bar as Wolves chased the game, before referee Colin Webster controversially reversed his decision to award the home side a penalty following Parkin's alleged handball - an incident that saw North End manager Alan Irvine sent to the stands for his initial protests.
