Wolves escape banana skin

Mick McCarthy

MICK McCarthy admitted it was simply a case of getting through to the third round of the Carling Cup after his side saw off Swindon on penalties.

The boss blamed a lack of match fitness for a poor display from Wolves after making 11 changes from the side that had lost at Manchester City.

“Overall there was not a great load of quality but we won the game,” he said.

“We had nothing more to achieve than being in the hat. We didn’t do it the way we would have liked but we’re in the hat.

“As for preferences for the next round? I never have any, apart from somebody at home.”

McCarthy had spoken to his players about the pressure they were under because of expectations.

“I said to the players before the game they were damned if they did and damned if they don’t,” he said. “All we could do was win it.

“We knew the Swindon players would be battle-hardened and have that match toughness.

“Whereas our players weren’t because they have not had many minutes in a competitive game.
