Bolton 1, Wolves 0: Bill Howell's big match verdict and player ratings

AL CAPONE slips through the net...Reggie and Ronnie Kray leap the wall...Peter Sutcliffe unlocks the main gates.

Points are prisoners.

Dennis Nilsen digs a tunnel and is gone. Harold Shipman dons a washer-woman’s outfit and walks clean out the door. Myra Hindley and Ian Brady trick their way passed the guards.

Points are prisoners.

Twenty four safely locked up behind bars. Another 12 or so still to find – but they are damn hard to find.

“Points are prisoners,” said Mick McCarthy in his pre-match address.

Kevin Doyle slips Matt Jarvis inside the area but the winger sees his near-post shot palmed around the post by the keeper – the Great Train robbers vanish into thin air.

Doyle slips Jarvis through once again but just as he shapes to shoot he gets a faint touch from Gretar Steinsson and his shot balloons over off Sam Ricketts – Ted Bundy takes an airplane.

Dave Jones’ free-kick smacks against the inside of the right post – Jack the Ripper sinks under the shadows.

Kevin Foley chests down and smacks a sumptuous volley against the inside of the left post – you’ll need Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to solve this one.

“Points are prisoners.”

You can bet your last penny that Manchester United will be like Guantanamo Bay officials and won’t be releasing any.

Arsenal and Villa too. They use heavy shackles of iron.

Good job that Burnley, Wigan and Hull are operating an amnesty. So many points frittered away elsewhere is keeping you afloat. Portsmouth jail demolished. Points and prisoners running amok along the south coast.

Whether it is a weak police force, handcuffs made of plastic, capture nets full of holes or searchlights that have no batteries, Wolves are allowing too many bad guys to roam free.

McCarthy isn’t bemoaning luck – that’s pretty honourable – but he was wrong not to do so on this occasion. The ‘Lady’ didn’t just desert his team as run off with their best mate or captain, to continue a popular theme.
