Bolton 1 Wolves 0: Bill Howell's big match verdict and player ratings

RONALD Zubar’s crazy injury-time back-pass sent Wolves crashing to a damaging defeat which leaves them rock bottom of the Premier League.

Ten seconds of the third and final minute of stoppage time had elapsed when the French defender, under no pressure, blindly tried to find Wayne Hennessey.

Daniel Sturridge nipped in and accepted the kind of gift not seen since three wise men found a baby in a manger.

“We had a point in our pocket and we have given it away,” said an angry Mick McCarthy.

“I’ve shaken his hand and told him to keep his chin up. That is hard for all of us, but it is what we’ve got to do. He didn’t mean to make the mistake but a mistake it was and if we continue to make them we are going to get punished. But he is one of my players, he works his socks off like the rest of them do and I’ve got to encourage him and support him.”

Expect Zubar to get a few mirrors in the post.

It was ridiculously cruel on Wolves, who were well worthy of a point and could easily have collected all three but Kevin Doyle’s late deflected shot came off Zat Knight and smacked against the post with Jussi Jaaskelainen rooted to the spot.

The loss sees Wolves remaining just three points from safety but they now prepare for a hellish couple of games with unbeaten Manchester United next at Molineux followed by a trip to Arsenal.

Hennessey had produced three superb saves to keep Bolton at bay but Wolves shaded the game after the break.

And in £500,000 new boy Adam Hammill they appear to have found a bargain.

He shone on his full debut and although he wasn’t to experience quite the dream start of Chelsea loanee Sturridge, the former Barnsley boy looked a class act.

It was from his superb through-ball that Matt Jarvis should have given Wolves an early lead. But sent clean through the middle Jarvis lost his cool and didn’t even find the target with his effort.

The plaudits belonged to Hammill, who limped off in the final minute when a first draw in the Premier League since October beckoned.

On the occasions when they did threaten in a tight, tense game Bolton found Hennessey in superb form. They could have opened the scoring when Stuart Holden’s ball was flicked on by Kevin Davies only for Chung-Yong Lee to fire wide from close range.

Bolton, previously winless in five Premier League encounters, pressed again and from Davies’ lay-off Johan Elmander was denied by a terrific Hennessey save at full stretch.
